In March, 30 students from the European School The Hague signed up for the MDT-YourCube program. A month later, on Friday, April 17, the first of three core training sessions took place. This session focused on Motivational Drivers and was provided by Laury from Ardis for the participating students.
The central question was: how do you discover what motivates you?
Throughout the afternoon, the students did various exercises to gain better insight into their personal drivers and how they can apply them, for example, in volunteer work. They started with a meditation exercise, reflecting on a moment when they felt good and proud. Then they walked through the classroom to link this feeling to core values written on notes on the floor.
Core values such as freedom, growth, and trust were frequently chosen. Students gave these their own meaning, such as: “Freedom: to choose what I want to do in life” and “Trust: to trust myself that it will work out, that I can do it.”
This was followed by an explanation of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle. In this theory, the ‘why’ question is central and more important than the ‘what’ question. The focus was on: why do I find something important and why do I do what I do?
Finally, the students worked with the questions what, how, and why, exploring what their drivers are, why they are important to them, and how they want to put them into practice.
The first step has been taken: but how will they use their ‘why’ for someone else later on?
