Since I joined the Haagse Helpers a few months ago, I have been able to participate in three social dinners. Although the experience is a little different each time, what remains constant is the unique opportunity these dinners offer to connect with others. As volunteers, we get to help prepare and serve the food that is provided at the dinners, while spending time talking with and getting to know members of the local community and fellow volunteers. These experiences have been very special for me as someone that moved to The Hague not too long ago. When I started living in this city, I did not know anyone. So, I wanted to find a volunteer opportunity that also allowed me to meet and interact with new people. This is exactly what I have gained through my work with the Haagse Helpers, and the social dinners in particular. The dinners offer a very relaxed, easy atmosphere to converse with individuals that you may not have the opportunity to interact with in your daily life. Especially if you are someone like me, who did not know anyone else in the city. In short, through the dinners, I have gotten to enjoy time with people that I otherwise likely never would have met, and my time here has been all the better for it’’.
